Juneberry
Juneberry is a laid back local eatery that draws inspiration from the prairie grasslands, with warm neutral colours and textures complemented by vibrant berry reds and rich aubergines. Completed in the summer of 2020, it evolves with the seasons, reflecting the cycle of ripening, maturing, and falling.
Our foraged berry and mushroom material palette was perfectly paired with the work by artist Maria Epp Art, whose abstract watercolours are painted with hand made inks from locally sourced pigments and plants.
These curved divider “mud-walls” were created with a hand-applied texture. They are meant to evoke our locally (in)famous clay river mud; dark, murky, and robust in a busy cafe. They envelop our custom hand-woven booths so guests feel protected and the staff can zip around without tripping over people, purses and coats.
“Bringing colour to life from these natural materials is a world unto itself; offering meaning and purpose to often discarded bits. Left behind berries and acorn caps. Stones and scrap metal washed up on shore. Stinging nettles at the end of season or charcoal left in a fire pit. Colour is the last gift nature has for us. Through a process of heat, pressure, grinding, sifting, drying, and a lot of chemistry, these colours come to life." – Maria Epp Art
Different berries in various degrees of ripeness inspired our custom metal mobiles “kinetic sculptures” that are constantly and gently in motion.
We also love the textural contrast of the raw hemp with the luminous mercury glass mirror tiles.
